As you might have read or heard, the judge’s ruling last week in the Google Antitrust case shows that he knows Search has changed forever. Many think that Judge Metha let Google off easy, but he has seen the research: the Google monopoly of Search is over. Here’s what that means for you:

RULING: US District Judge Amit P. Mehta ruled on September 2, 2025, that Google must share certain search and user data with competitors and cannot enter into exclusive distribution contracts.
NO DIVESTITURE OF CHROME, ADWORDS OR ANDROID: The judge didn’t impose these because he sees that LLMs like ChatGPT are already loosening Google’s 90% monopoly of Search.
GOOGLE AI OVERVIEWS: You will see these results on almost all of your searches on Google now. They provide the answer to your query without you needing to click on any of the old “10 Blue Links.”
DIVING DEEPER: Our research partners’ data shows that 85% of searchers click on the “Dive Deeper” or “Show More In AI Mode” to get more results.
LOTS OF IMPRESSIONS. FEWER CLICKS: That seems to be what the research is showing now that Google is using its LLM Gemini to provide its search answers in paragraph form.
LOGJAM BROKEN UP? Research from Ahrefs showed recently that the Top 5 search results on Google, in most cases, have not changed in the last 3 years. AI Overviews are changing that as they seem to pull from many results that are not listed on the first page of Google search results.
